Nisargadatta Speaks

Posted by Muthu on April 24, 2011

I thought of sharing with you some words of wisdom from Nisargadatta for the weekend.

1) Once you realize that all happens by itself, call it destiny, or the will of God, or mere accident, you remain as witness only, understanding and enjoying, but not perturbed. You are responsible only for what you can change. All you can change is only your attitude. There lies your responsibility.

2) Most of our karma is collective. We suffer for the sins of others, as others suffer for ours. Humanity is one.

3) The consciousness in you and the consciousness in me, apparently two, really one, seek unity and that is love.

4)  Let the dream unroll itself to its very end. You cannot help it. But you can look at the dream as a dream; refuse it the stamp of reality.

5) It was the same ten thousand years ago and will be the same ten thousand years hence. Centuries roll on, but the human problems do not change – the problem of suffering and the ending of suffering.

6) Pain is physical, suffering is mental. Beyond the mind there is no suffering. Pain is essential for survival of the body, but none compels you to suffer. Suffering is entirely due to clinging or resisting; it is a sign of unwillingness to move on, to flow with life.

7) Pain and pleasure go always together. Freedom from one means freedom from both. If you do not care for pleasure, you will not be afraid of pain.

8) Once you realize the road is the goal and that you are always on the road, not to reach the goal, but to enjoy its beauty and wisdom, life ceases to be a task and becomes natural and simple, in itself an ecstasy.

9) All happened as it happened because it had to happen, everything happens as it does, because the universe is as it is.

10) Having realized that you cannot influence the results, pay no attention to your desire and fears. Let them come and go. Don’t give them the nourishment of interest and attention.

11) Ego is the worst of all the tyrants, it dominates you absolutely.

12) It is the changing that dies. The immutable neither lives nor dies; it is the timeless witness of birth and death. You cannot call it dead, for it is aware. Nor can you call it alive, for it does not change.

13) You can become a night watchman and live happily. It is what you are inwardly that matters. Your inner peace and joy you have to earn. It is much more difficult than earning money. No university can teach you to be yourself.

14) All that happens is the cause of all that happens. Causes are numberless; the idea of sole cause is an illusion.

15) Things get destroyed by their own perfection. A perfect society is necessarily static and, therefore it stagnates and decays. From the summit all roads lead downwards. Societies are like people – they are born, they grow to some point of relative perfection and then they decay and die.
